Martin started playing age 12 on cornet. He was taught by Haydn Cooper and obtained his grade 5.

Martin went on to join Riddings Brass in 1980, when they were in the 4th section. Martin then moved onto Bb bass shortly after joining.

He then stayed with Riddings for 23 years. rising through the ranks to the Championship section.

 

Martin left in 2003 after the Dundee finals, achieving 7th place out of 17. Martin then played with Carlton Band (formerly Nottingham City Transport) at the Area and Cheltenham finals in 2015.

Martin joined Blidworth Band in July 2023 on Bb bass.
