Steve Hill

Solo Cornet

Steve started playing the cornet at the age of six with the Salvation Army back in his home town of Yeovil. To this day, the Salvation Army has always remained a major influence in Steve’s love of music both in listening and performing.

Throughout his playing career Steve has been fortunate to have played with bands such as Woodfalls, Flowers, Aldbourne and Jaguar Land Rover, to name but a few before joining Blidworth Welfare in May 2018.

To list all Steves favourite pieces would fill this website, but to name just a few, he would list Just as I am (Wilfred Heaton), Call of the Righteous (Leslie Condon; a fantastic composer, way ahead of his time) and the March The Red Shield by Dean Goffin.

Without a doubt, Steve says his biggest influence as a player was from the amazing David Daws at the time when he was Principal Cornet with the ISB. His tone, lyricism and technical ability was second to none – just listen to Golden Slipper!

When not playing for Blidworth Welfare Band Steve is a Design Consultant working in Financial Services and Regulation and is the Principal Trumpet of the Derby Concert Band.

Favourite Test Piece: Isaiah 40 by Robert Redhead
