Alan Gifford New MD for Blidworth

Blidworth Welfare Band are pleased to announce that their new MD is Alan Gifford. He most recently was Solo Trombone for the GUS band and is currently MD for Amington Band. We are really looking forward to him working alongside John Roberts up to the Area and then taking on the position fully after the competition.

Alan commented on his appointment. “I’m very excited to have been appointed Musical Director at Blidworth Welfare Band, they are a great bunch of hard working people with a fantastic organisational team too! I am looking forward to getting started after the Midland Area contest and wish the band and their conductor for the contest John Roberts the very best of luck!”

Alan began his playing career at the age of 8 with the Amington Band based in his hometown of Tamworth, he started on cornet and eventually made his way onto the trombone where he held the solo trombone seat until starting his studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire in 2009. Alan studied trombone performance under Edward Jones and Anthony Howe, both players in the CBSO. Whilst at college Alan performed with the Langley Band, Tongwynlais Temperance Band and the Staffordshire Band. After graduating in 2013 Alan remained with the Staffordshire Band until 2018 where he then joined the Flowers Band for a year before making the move to the GUS Band where he was appointed their solo trombone in 2019. In 2017 Alan made a return back to where his playing started but this time as the Musical Director of Amington Band where he has enjoyed success both on the concert and contest platform, the highlight being winning the 2020 Midland Area contest off the number 1 draw in a field of 21 bands! Alan is now currently studying for a Masters in Music specialising in Brass Band conducting to further improve his skills as a conductor at the now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under the guidance of Ian Porthouse. Alan currently works as a Brass Instrumental Teacher for Services For Education - Music Service in Birmingham teaching the next generation of brass players

Blidworth Welfare band are very excited for the next few months as we continue to build on our strengths.
