Death of Don Blakeson
Blidworth Welfare Band are sad to announce the death of former Musical Director Don Blakeson ARCM who conducted Blidworth Welfare Band in 1997 and 1998.
Don studied trumpet at the Royal College of Music. He was a professional trumpet player in London orchestras during the 1960s and 70s and held the co-principal trumpet post in the BBC Radio Orchestra and BBC Big Band, and the English National Opera Orchestra. He was also a busy session player.
He joined the Leicestershire School of Music in 1978 as Head of Brass/Director of Bands, becoming Vice-Principal of Leicestershire Arts. He was Musical Director of the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra from 1995 to 1997.
Don also had considerable experience as a conductor of brass bands including Desford, Fodens and City of Coventry before leading Blidworth in the 1997 Mineworkers Championships and the 1998 Midlands Regional First Section Championships.
