Simon Cheetham

Second Horn

Simon started playing the French Horn at school at the age of 11 but soon switched to tenor horn and brass bands joining the Kirkby Colliery Welfare Band before moving to The Riddings Band. He took a break from playing whilst studying Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield University.

Following university Simon moved back to Nottinghamshire starting a job at Rolls-Royce and taking a seat on horn at Thornton’s Brass in the same section as his horn tutor Neil Emson. Simon spent a year with Thornton’s enjoying both a band tour of Belgium and a trip to the first section national finals in Birmingham. At the beginning of the following year Simon moved to Newstead Brass and was part of the team that got the band promotion to the top section in 2000. After a successful few years at Newstead Simon moved to Carlton Brass before a taking another break to concentrate on work.

Simon returned to banding in 2006 rejoining Riddings briefly before heading back to Newstead this time on 3rd cornet (!); something never to be repeated. In 2010 Simon moved his banding to Yorkshire by joining the Dronfield Genquip Band where he enjoyed six years of playing the highlights of which were winning the Yorkshire Third Section area and playing at a last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. He left Dronfield during the autumn of 2016, thinking he had hung his horn up for the last time.

A message out of the blue in January 2018 saw Simon joining the Blidworth Welfare Band with the daunting task of playing Odyssey at the Midlands regional championships. A task which Simon enjoyed immensely and was very proud to have got 5th place with the band at the contest. Simon is currently enjoying being part of the brass band family again and pleased to be involved with such a great bunch of players at Blidworth.
