Fendall is a dual citizen, New Zealand-born Australian, based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. A civil engineer by profession, he is married to Oriana, and has three teenage children. He has played cornet since 7 years of age, and was taught by his father, the great New Zealand trombonist Tom Hill.
Fendall moved to his natural instrument, the soprano cornet at age 18, in 1983. He is the 2019 Australian soprano cornet champion, a title he has held previously, in addition to being a four-time New Zealand soprano cornet champion.
In recent years, Fendall has composed many works since his 20s, some have been used as test pieces in New Zealand and Australian national championships. In recent years his passion for composition has reignited, and his pieces are starting to receive worldwide recognition.
