Sandra Kowalenko

Solo Horn

Blidworth Welfare Band

Sandra comes from a Salvation Army background, where her dad Ken Evans played cornet before he moved onto euphonium, as well as having a musical background from her grandparents who were also brass players.

Sandra started playing in 1973 aged 21, so was later to join the brass band movement, however she did play the piano when she was younger!

Sandra joined Clipstone Welfare Brass band where her dad was playing in 1974, then joined Blidworth Welfare Band in 1983, a big move from the 4th section to solo horn in a championship section band (which Sandra describes as a bit of a culture shock - but she hasn’t looked back since!)

Sandra then moved to Newstead Brass in 1990, then onto Riddings Band in 1997. She then returned to Newstead in 2002, finally returning to Blidworth in 2012 where she has played since.

Sandra also plays solo horn with the Masson Mills band.

One of Sandra’s biggest achievements was playing On Alderley Edge at the English Nationals Competition and beating a lot of the big named bands, which Sandra said was a fabulous feeling!

Sandra’s eldest son Steven also followed in her footsteps and played for several local top section bands before joining the army as a musician. He played cornet for the Scots Guards and finally the Welsh Guards band before moving back to “civvy street” as a personal fitness instructor.
